MZ RE250 c.1961 AIR COOLED

£39,950.00

An extremely rare and important machine with lots of history, featured in numerous books and magazines. One of only 3 known examples in the world. 1960-61 air cooled specification, case stamped 04/61.

It was previously restored by John Mossey and is still in very good condition but with a lovely patina. The restoration was discussed in the May/June 1994 issue of Classic Racer magazine. It has not been used for the past few years, kept in secure dry storage.

This machine was considered so significant that it was given the honour of bearing the No.1 and was the first bike to ascend the hill at the inaugural Goodwood Festival of Speed in 1993, ridden by Rupert Murden and appearing on the video. Rupert also rode it at the 1994 event and it would be a likely candidate for future anniversary events.

The bike has since been paraded at numerous prestigious events including the Isle of Man TT Lap of Honour.

The former MZ factory rider Alan Shepherd asserted several times that this was his 1964 American 250GP winner at Daytona when fitted with a water-cooled top end engine. The May/June 1994 issue of Classic Racer features a photograph of Alan sitting on this machine with a caption stating he is convinced this is the bike with which he won the American Grand Prix.

This bike has not been on the market for over 20 years and represents an exceptional opportunity.
